Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) Order 841 addressed this issue in U.S. wholesale markets and directed market operators to develop rules governing storage''s
The energy storage capacity, E, is calculated using the efficiency calculated above to represent energy losses in the BESS itself. This is an approximation since actual battery efficiency will
The deployment of "new type" energy storage capacity almost quadrupled in 2023 in China, increasing to 31.4GW, up from just 8.7GW in 2022, according to data from the National Energy Administration (NEA). This means
AI data center electricity demand is growing, not only in the United States, but worldwide, with it expected to reach 20% of global electricity demand by 2030-2035. Some utilities such as Dominion Energy are adding
The "material assistance" restrictions apply to projects that begin construction after December 31, 2025, while the ownership restrictions apply to credits claimed for taxable
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are transforming the US energy landscape by addressing the intermittency of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, enhancing grid resilience, and enabling deeper renewable
In this edition of Code Corner, we talk about NFPA 855, Standard for the Installation of Stationary Energy Storage Systems. In particular, spacing requirements and limitations for energy storage systems (ESS). NFPA

This estimate is based on newly added capacity in 2023 reported by China Energy Storage Alliance and average investment costs calculated from National Energy Administration data.
Approximately 16 states have adopted some form of energy storage policy, which broadly fall into the following categories: procurement targets, regulatory adaption, demonstration programs, financial incentives, and consumer protections. Below we give an overview of each of these energy storage policy categories.
The requirements of this ordinance shall apply to all battery energy storage systems with a rated nameplate capacity of equal to or greater than 1,000 kilowatts (1 megawatt).
Rated power capacity is the total possible instantaneous discharge capability (in kilowatts [kW] or megawatts [MW]) of the BESS, or the maximum rate of discharge that the BESS can achieve, starting from a fully charged state. Storage duration is the amount of time storage can discharge at its power capacity before depleting its energy capacity.
Our review demonstrates that no jurisdiction currently provides a comprehensive regulatory framework for energy storage, with the majority of jurisdictions currently allowing storage to be defined as “generation” for the purposes of licensing and other regulatory requirements.
But the risks for power-system security of the converse problem — excessive energy storage — have been mostly overlooked. China plans to install up to 180 million kilowatts of pumped-storage hydropower capacity by 2030. This is around 3.5 times the current capacity, and equivalent to 8 power plants the size of China’s Three Gorges Dam.
The flexibility of energy storage is demonstrated by projects being able to provide some or all of the following to the electricity system: Energy storage may be used in a range of project types, including standalone, co-located, and behind-the-meter projects. Standalone energy storage projects are increasingly utility-scale installations.
